Are you a proud owner of a Lexus GX460, looking to tackle a DIY project that will keep your vehicle operating smoothly? If so, we have a detailed guide just for you! Today, we will walk you through the process of installing the HVAC blower motor in your Lexus GX460, spanning from the years 2010 to 2023. This step-by-step guide is perfect for not only DIY enthusiasts, but also mechanics looking for a quick reference.

What You'll Need:

Before diving into the installation process, make sure you have the following tools and parts ready:

  • New HVAC blower motor (Part Number: 87103-60400)

  • Phillips Screwdriver

  • T25 Torx

  • Flashlight(*Not required but helpful)

Step 1: Prepare for Installation

Start by gathering the new blower motor and your tools. I purchased a new OEM blower motor, but you can also purchase an aftermarket unit to save money. Just keep in mind some of the aftermarket units use cheaper components(blade, bearings, motor, etc.). These can either wear out quicker or even make noise right out of the box.

Step 2: Locate the Blower Motor

The HVAC blower motor is located underneath the dash on the passenger foot well. It is accessible by removing the lower panel of the dash.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Dash Panel

Using a screwdriver, carefully unscrew the single screw holding the lower dash panel in place. After removing the screw, pull down on the panel and it will pop down. There are push clips holding in place closest to you; it may take a little effort but will come down with ease. You will quickly notice there is a wire attached to the panel; this is for the foot well light.

Step 4: Remove the Foot Well Light & Wiring

To remove the foot well light and wiring, first start with the light(left side). Pull up on the right portion of the light assembly and tilt to the left while pulling up. It will easily pop out of the panel. To remove the clip holding the wiring to the panel: Hold the panel with one hand while using your other hand to pull the clip off the panel. I have found it easiest to pull from the back side of the clip and rotate it towards you. It will come off with a little more effort, but don't be scared to pull it.

Step 5: Remove the HVAC Blower Motor Wiring

With the panel removed and placed out of the way, you will now see the HVAC Blower Motor. To remove the motor, first, start with removing the electrical connector. There is a push release tab that holds it in place. Squeeze this with your hand while pulling down on the electrical connector; it will take a decent amount of effort as it's designed to be a tight, locking, fit. Try not to pull on the wiring its self, pull from the connector body.

Step 6: Remove the HVAC Blower Motor Assembly

Now that the wiring is disconnected, all that is left is to unscrew the (3) T25 Torx Screws holding the blower motor in place. Using your T25 Torx tool, unscrew all three screws. Keep your hand on the blower motor when unscrewing the last screw, so the blower motor doesn't fall down on you. The blower motor will now practically just fall right out of the dash.

Step 7: Install the HVAC Blower Motor Assembly

Now you follow the steps in reverse. Start by placing the new blower motor up inside the dash. There is a "duct" portion of the blower motor that needs to line up with the "duct" in the dash. It will be obvious when you look up at it. Otherwise, the new motor will just slide into place. Next step is to screw in the (3) T25 Torx screws. These just need to be hand tight, no need to crank on them.

Step 8: DONT FORGET: Connect the Blower Motor Wiring

This step is crucial. Don't forget to reconnect the blower motor wiring. The connector only goes one way. When pressing it in, there will be a positive "click" when it locks in.

Step 9: Test to confirm function

Now is a good time to test to make sure the blower motor is working before installing the dash panel. Start your vehicle, turn on the HVAC system, and confirm the fan works all the way from low to high setting. Is it working? Congratulations; I knew you could do this!

Step 10: Install the lower dash panel

The last step is to install the lower dash panel. First step in this process is to connect the foot well light and wiring back to the panel. The foot well light will snap back into the panel the opposite you pulled it out. The same will go for the wiring clip. The second step of this process is to line up the back of the panel with the receiving holes on the dash. You will notice there are two parts on the back of the panel that stick out and have felt/foam on them. Those hold the back of the panel up and keep the panel in the right place. It's important to not miss that step! Once you have those lined up, the front of the panel will go back into place by lining up the clips and pressing firmly up into the dash. The last and final step is to put the single, Phillips head screw back into place.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed a new HVAC blower motor in your Lexus GX460. By following this guide, you've not only saved money on labor costs but also gained valuable experience in maintaining your vehicle.
